Then, suddenly feeling no gravity, Earth would shoot off into space in a straight line." They were speaking theoretically just to give an example showing the time it takes gravity to reach us. We don't have to worry about the sun going out on us in our life time. It is a type G2V star, meaning it lives for about 10 billion years, its only about 5 billion old. I highly doubt life as we know it will exist when the sun reaches the 10 million mark (unless seriously evolved) Becaus in about 2-3 billion years from now through chemical processes, the sun will have swelled in size to the point where the surface temperature on earth will be a few hundred degrees or more. Who knows if darwin can save us humanity from that fate.
